Residential Program

The NYSSB Residential Program is designed to meet the needs of our students who reside more than 50 miles away. It is a warm, caring, and nurturing home-like environment. As an extension of the educational program, the residential program fosters independent daily living and social skills using specialized strategies for students who are blind and visually impaired.

Students reside on campus from Sunday – Friday or Monday – Friday based on their individual circumstances. The residential program is attached to the educational program which allows for safe, supervised travel before and after school.

During residential hours, the students participate in a variety of activities which are designed to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC). The ECC is used to define concepts and skills that often require specialized instruction with students who are blind or visually impaired to compensate for decreased opportunities to learn incidentally by observing others. ECC activities include social skills, sensory efficiency, self-determination, career and vocational, independent living skills, assistance technology, orientation and mobility, and recreation and leisure.
