Institutional Accreditation by the Board of Regents and Commissioner of Education
The New York State Board of Regents and Commissioner of Education served as a nationally recognized accrediting agency for a number of institutions of higher education in New York State from 1952 into May 2023. In October 2021, the Board of Regents voted to not pursue a renewal of that status as an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE). Complexities associated with the unique role of both state regulatory body and institutional accrediting agency—along with significant changes in the national accreditation landscape—had informed the Board of Regents in its consideration. The Board of Regents and Commissioner of Education’s authority to act as an institutional accrediting agency ended May 10, 2023, when the term of recognition by the USDE expired.
